Twitter, you’re killing me

Everyone has been jumping on the Twitter aggravation bandwagon recently and I have watched and thought that it really wasn’t that big of a deal. I get aggravated when Twitterific pops up incessantly with tweets that I really don’t care about. But right now I feel really disconnected when I can’t communicate with the tech world and keep up with different happenings around the globe. I never realized how much information I actually get through my twitter feed.  It being down is really bothering me.

Twitter, please come back!

15 Startup Commandments

From the Web 2.0 group on Facebook:

+15 Startup Commandments

1. Your idea isn’t new. Pick an idea; at least 50 other people have thought of it. Get over your stunning brilliance and realize that execution matters more.

2. Stealth startups suck. You’re not working on the Manhattan Project, Einstein. Get something out as quickly as possible and promote the hell out of it.

3. If you don’t have scaling problems, you’re not growing fast enough.

4. If you’re successful, people will try to take advantage of you. Hope that you’re in that position, and hope that you’re smart enough to not fall for it.

5. People will tell you they know more than you do. If that’s really the case, you shouldn’t be doing your startup.

6. Your competition will inflate their numbers. Take any startup traffic number and slash it in half. At least.

7. Perfection is the enemy of good enough. Leonardo could paint the Mona Lisa only once. You, Bob Ross, can push a bug release every 5 minutes because you were at least smart enough to do a web app.

8. The size of your startup is not a reflection of your manhood. More employees does not make you more of a man (or woman as the case may be).

9. You don’t need business development people. If you’re successful, companies will come to you. The deals will still be distractions and not worth doing, but at least you’re not spending any effort trying to get them.

10. You have to be wrong in the head to start a company. But we have all the fun.

11. Starting a company will teach you what it’s like to be a manic depressive. They, at least, can take medication.

12. Your startup isn’t succeeding? You have two options: go home with your tail between your legs or do something about it. What’s it going to be?

13. If you don’t pay attention to your competition, they will turn out to be geniuses and will crush you. If you do pay attention to them, they will turn out to be idiots and you will have wasted your time. Which would you prefer?

14. Startups are not a democracy. Want a democracy? Go run for class president, Bueller.

15. You’re doing a web app, right? This isn’t the 1980s. Your crummy, half-assed web app will still be more successful than your competitor’s most polished software application.

Creative Workspaces

I saw a link on twitter from from Guy Kawasaki. It was about creative workspaces and of course caught my eye since I am involved with The Creative Space. I love to see people being creative with their space, a plain cubicle just isn’t good for productivity. A little visual interest goes a long way in all applications, whether it is a workspace or your home. I’ve never seen a blog post or magazine article for boring, safe, unoriginal rooms. Check out the pictures of these great spaces!

Social Networking Applications

I’ve been doing a lot of research for the BuildingProcess business plan. I’ve seen a lot of great statistics and I thought I would share a couple of them.

Here is what IDC said about Social Networks:

“Social networking is the new must-have communication application and is being used for both marketing and operational efficiency,” said Rachel Happe, IDC research manager, in a statement.

“Social networking applications drive engagements, information exposure and conversions as well as reducing marketing and operational costs,” Ms. Happe said.

The Institute for Corporate Development issued this statistic about business and social networking:

  • The majority of respondents (59%) said they would likely use social networks if they knew that such use would assist their professional development; 31% say they already do
  • Some 77% said would welcome using them if they thought the networks could aid organizational efficiency; nearly 16% said they already use them in their organization.

And here we go… for everyone that insists people over 40 don’t use the web as much as the younger generations… from The Center for Media Research:

Among baby boomers and mid-lifers - those in their early 40s through mid 60s - 72 percent are broadband-connected, and 82 percent use the web.

However, unlike younger generations, those 40 and up are not watching videos, writing blogs, playing games or downloading music, notes the report. Rather, they are online primarily to research products, find info for themselves and their families, read news, and so on.

I could go on. This is what makes me so excited about BuildingProcess. We have the ability to create a tool (application) that can completely change the home industry.

Jason Calacanis On Not Sleeping

I like this snippet from Jason Calacanis’s blog. Since I haven’t really slept in weeks, I’m hoping this is my problem….

Trouble sleeping is one of the most important early indicators as an entrepreneur that you’re on to something big. If you’re sleeping well at night then something is WRONG. Great ideas, big problems, and execution puzzles keep you tossing and turning. I’ve learned to embrace my insomnia, not fight it. If you can’t sleep get the frack out of bed and work, write some emails, or do a blog post. Get it out of your system then try to sleep. However, don’t think there is something wrong with you… there’s something right with you!
